Here's how Apple squeezed over 3 million pixels in the new iPad screen
The new, third iPad comes with a stunning Retina display with a resolution of 2048×1536 pixels – that’s 264ppi, or four times the number of pixels of older iPads. What you may not know is that it wasn’t Apple who created the technology making such a leap possible. It was actually engineers from Sharp and JSR that pioneered a design called Super High Aperture (SHA) years ago.
Due to various reasons including some issues with the complex process of designing such high-res displays, it didn’t get traction when it was first unveiled. Now, however it’s getting more and more popular, and might soon become the standard for LCD displays.
Apple explains SHA by simply saying that pixels are elevated and thus separated from the signals.
Now, getting a bit more technical, you’d see that SHA increases the aperture ratio using a 3µm thick photo-definable acrylic resin layer to divide the device in planes and allow for a larger vertical gap between pixel electrodes and signal lines. Why? This makes it possible to avoid cross talk and decrease capacitive coupling. All of the pros and cons of the SHA method are illustrated below.

Windows 8Microsoft is rolling a hard six with their tablet strategy in Windows 8, and while it might be a hard sale with iPad crazy consumers, at least in the Enterprise they have a fighting chance. Dell knows this, and plans to be ready to go with tablet offerings for businesses on Windows 8 launch day. The information came from a Bloomberg interview conducted last week in which CEO Michael Dell praised the new Microsoft OS, and claims demand will be strong for a “secure Windows tablet that works with all Windows applications”.

Given that he put extra emphasis on “application compatibility”, that leads us to believe x86 based slates will be first out of the gate, however its possible ARM will be available as an option as well. In a separate interview Bloomberg was also able to confirm that Dell would continue to develop and release tablets and smartphones based on Android, but is pinning most of their tablet hopes on Windows 8.

That’s probably a sound strategy considering that being the “industry leader” when it comes to Android tablets is still a lousy place to be these days.

As manufacturers continue to increase their chip performance by increasing the number of cores they contain, the risk of failure and faulty design issues also increases. A group of researchers that specialize in computer architecture at MIT believe they have a helpful solution. They developed a software simulator, dubbed Hornet, which models the performance of multicore chips much more accurately than its predecessors and can provide a “cycle-accurate” simulation of a chip with 1,000 cores.

For the last decade or so, computer chip manufacturers have been increasing the speed of their chips by giving them extra processing units, or “cores.” Most major manufacturers now offer chips with eight, 10 or even 12 cores.

But if chips are to continue improving at the rate we’ve grown accustomed to — doubling in power roughly every 18 months — they’ll soon require hundreds and even thousands of cores. Academic and industry researchers are full of ideas for improving the performance of multicore chips, but there’s always the possibility that an approach that seems to work well with 24 or 48 cores may introduce catastrophic problems when the core count gets higher. No chip manufacturer will take a chance on an innovative chip design without overwhelming evidence that it works as advertised.

As a research tool, an MIT group that specializes in computer architecture has developed a software simulator, dubbed Hornet, that models the performance of multicore chips much more accurately than its predecessors do. At the Fifth International Symposium on Networks-on-Chip in 2011, the group took the best-paper prize for work in which they used the simulator to analyze a promising and much-studied multicore-computing technique, finding a fatal flaw that other simulations had missed. And in a forthcoming issue of IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems, the researchers present a new version of the simulator that factors in power consumption as well as patterns of communication between cores, the processing times of individual tasks, and memory-access patterns.

The flow of data through a chip with hundreds of cores is monstrously complex, and previous software simulators have sacrificed some accuracy for the sake of efficiency. For more accurate simulations, researchers have typically used hardware models — programmable chips that can be reconfigured to mimic the behavior of multicore chips. According to Myong Hyon Cho, a PhD student in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and one of Hornet’s developers, Hornet is intended to complement, not compete with, these other two approaches. “We think that Hornet sits in the sweet spot between them,” Cho says.

The various tasks performed by a chip’s many components are synchronized by a master clock; during each “clock cycle,” each component performs one task. Hornet is significantly slower than its predecessors, but it can provide a “cycle-accurate” simulation of a chip with 1,000 cores. “‘Cycle-accurate’ means the results are precise to the level of a single cycle,” Cho explains. “For example, [Hornet has] the ability to say, ‘This task takes 1,223,392 cycles to finish.’”

Existing simulators are good at evaluating chips’ general performance, but they can miss problems that arise only in rare, pathological cases. Hornet is much more likely to ferret those out, as it did in the case of the research presented at the Network-on-Chip Symposium. There, Cho, his adviser and EECS professor Srini Devadas, and their colleagues analyzed a promising multicore-computing technique in which the chip passes computational tasks to the cores storing the pertinent data rather than passing data to the cores performing the pertinent tasks. Hornet identified the risk of a problem called deadlock, which other simulators had missed. (Deadlock is a situation in which some number of cores are waiting for resources — communications channels or memory locations — in use by other cores. No core will abandon the resource it has until it’s granted access to the one it needs, so clock cycles tick by endlessly without any of the cores doing anything.)

In addition to identifying the risk of deadlock, the researchers also proposed a way to avoid it — and demonstrated that their proposal worked with another Hornet simulation. That illustrates Hornet’s advantage over hardware systems: the ease with which it can be reconfigured to test out alternative design proposals.

Building simulations that will run on hardware “is more tricky than just writing software,” says Edward Suh, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Cornell University, whose group used an early version of Hornet that just modeled communication between cores. “It’s hard to say whether it’s inherently more difficult to write, but at least right now, there’s less of an infrastructure, and students do not know those languages as well as they do regular programming language. So as of right now, it’s more work.” Hornet, Suh says, could have advantages in situations where “you want to test out several ideas quickly, with good accuracy.”

Suh points out, however, that because Hornet is slower than either hardware simulations or less-accurate software simulations, “you tend to simulate a short period of the application rather than trying to run the whole application.” But, he adds, “That’s definitely useful if you want to know if there are some abnormal behaviors.” And furthermore, “there are techniques people use, like statistical sampling, or things like that, to say, ‘these are representative portions of the application.’”

Initially found by three PayPal employees, YouTube, the largest video sharing website was later in November 2006 sold to Google Inc for a whopping 1.65 billion USD, but given the success of the site, this is a justified amount.

Just to give you a feel of the prowess of YouTube, I will give you the incredible statistics that shall leave you startled. Estimates say that in the year 2007, the bandwidth consumed by this site equalled that of the entire internet in 2000. It is also the third most visited website closely following Google and Facebook which are the leaders undoubtedly. Also, it is estimated that a whopping 48 hours of video get uploaded on an average on the site every single minute; one is only left to imagine the reach of this site.

What Exactly Is A YouTube View?

One very common doubt among users is regarding the views.

What exactly is a YouTube view? To clear your doubts, views as the term itself implies refers to watching something, hence it is a number that gives you an idea of the number of people interested in the uploaded video. YouTube view is a count of the popularity quotient of the video. It helps the person uploading it know their reach. It is a good measure to know the success rate and the calculations for calculating the views are fairly simple. Every time a URL is accessed, and a video is played, it is counted as a view, however, refreshing a page does not add to the views, but re opening the link is taken as a hit as it is believed that you are watching it again so this obviously must be another “YouTube view“.

Some iOS users have trouble with switch to Daylight Savings Time
If you were expecting to meet someone Sunday morning and they arrived two hours late, the odds are that they are sporting an Apple iPhone. In what has become an annual event, iOS continues to have problems with the simple task of moving the clock ahead an hour for the second Sunday in March. Some Apple iPhone users actually had their clocks turned back an hour instead which meant that these people would be two hours late to a meeting if they relied on their handset for the time. Even the iPhone’s voice activated personal assistant was confused as Siri mistakenly had DST starting this past Wednesday, 4 days ago.

Even with your Apple iPhone aware of your location, the clocks are showing incorrect time. One Florida based user has a clock running on Chicago time and in Arizona, where DST in not observed, the Apple iPhone moved some clocks ahead an hour. A simple device restart might fix the problem, or turning the time automation off and on again might do the trick.

In the future, Apple iPhone users might do well to heed the advice from one iPhone user who suggests using the device’s countdown timer as a backup just in case the clock on the phone goes wonky. And as far as today’s shift to Daylight Savings Time (or “Summer Time” in Europe), we would suggest just checking with another time source for now, just until you’ve either confirmed that the clock on your iOS device is correct or until you have set the correct time yourself.

The Linux Foundation earlier this week welcomed four new members. It’s not the number of new members that’s important here, though. What’s more important is the fact that one these new Linux patrons is graphics chip maker Nvidia. Hit the jump for more.

The Santa Clara, California-based company has joined the Linux Foundation as a silver member. While undoubtedly an important addition, Nvidia is not the first major chip maker on the non-profit consortium’s membership roll, which already boasts the likes of Intel (platinum member) and AMD (gold member).

Speculation is already rife that Nvidia plans to open source its drivers. However, the official press release contains nothing regarding the extent and nature of Nvidia’s commitment to Linux. In fact, it has little more than the following quote from Scott Pritchett, VP of Linux Platform Software at Nvidia:

“NVIDIA is strongly committed to enabling world-class experiences and innovation with our GPU and mobile products. Membership in The Linux Foundation will accelerate our collaboration with the organizations and individuals instrumental in shaping the future of Linux, enabling a great experience for users and developers of Linux,” said Scott Pritchett, VP of Linux Platform Software at NVIDIA.”

Of course, Nvidia is not the only company to have joined the Linux Foundation this week. The others to do so are Fluendo, Lineo Solutions and Mocana.

U.S. Cellular reps scanned customers phones for nude pictures according to sexual harassment suit
Lisa Blazek, who worked from 2007-2010 as a retail consultant at a U.S. Cellular store in Iowa, is suing the regional carrier for sexual harassment. According to Blazek, employees at the store located in the northwest Iowa city of Spencer, would routinely search customers’ phones seeking pictures of a sexual nature. If such photos were found, they would be passed around the store. Blazek, 32, made the claim with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission, filed as part of an amended lawsuit in federal court last week.

In her filing, Blazek said that “Many times I would be called over to look at something only to find out that it was a sexual picture on a customer’s phone.” More specifically, she says that she was shown pictures of a woman masturbating, a man lying on a bed naked and other pornography. Attorneys representing U.S. Cellular and four employees named in the lawsuit denied the allegations. According to Blazek, the store featured almost non-stop sexual harassment including talk by her co-workers of their sex life and that of customers. Her own genitalia and her favorite sexual positions were art of conversations and one time she claims that a fellow worker asked to see her breasts. When she complained to the store manager, he told her to deal with it since she was the one bothered by it. She was also threatened that she could lose her job by complaining to executives higher-up the corporate ladder. Eventually, Blazek had her hours changed to avoid the worst of the offenders, but there was no disciplinary action taken.

Blasek, who is married and has left U.S. Cellular to return to school, is seeking compensation for lost pay and health benefits,
suffering and emotional distress and additional punitive damages in an effort to
deter similar conduct in the future. Blazek said the harassment got worse after she reported it. In her filing, she claims that a company investigator tried to get her to admit that she had a relationship with one of the problem employees and tried to get her to forget the filing. After being told that she would have to move to a different U.S. Cellular location, Blasek finally quit. In the filing she wrote, “It got to the point where I could no longer handle going to work. It affected me physically, mentally and
emotionally. It took over every aspect of my life.”

In an unusual move, U.S. District Judge Mark Bennett told lawyers for both sides that he was using the suit as a case study for a employment discrimination class he teaches at Drake University. Both sides agreed that certain paers would be sealed until June.

By using the power of carbon nanotubes, scientists have almost tripled the speed of prototype nano-biosensors. The researchers believe that this nanotechnology will make it possible to do many medical lab tests in minutes and will drastically reduce the cost of those tests.

CORVALLIS, Oregon – Researchers at Oregon State University have tapped into the extraordinary power of carbon “nanotubes” to increase the speed of biological sensors, a technology that might one day allow a doctor to routinely perform lab tests in minutes, speeding diagnosis and treatment while reducing costs.

The new findings have almost tripled the speed of prototype nano-biosensors, and should find applications not only in medicine but in toxicology, environmental monitoring, new drug development and other fields.

The research was just reported in Lab on a Chip, a professional journal. More refinements are necessary before the systems are ready for commercial production, scientists say, but they hold great potential.

“With these types of sensors, it should be possible to do many medical lab tests in minutes, allowing the doctor to make a diagnosis during a single office visit,” said Ethan Minot, an OSU assistant professor of physics. “Many existing tests take days, cost quite a bit and require trained laboratory technicians.

“This approach should accomplish the same thing with a hand-held sensor, and might cut the cost of an existing $ 50 lab test to about $ 1,” he said.

The key to the new technology, the researchers say, is the unusual capability of carbon nanotubes. An outgrowth of nanotechnology, which deals with extraordinarily small particles near the molecular level, these nanotubes are long, hollow structures that have unique mechanical, optical and electronic properties, and are finding many applications.

In this case, carbon nanotubes can be used to detect a protein on the surface of a sensor. The nanotubes change their electrical resistance when a protein lands on them, and the extent of this change can be measured to determine the presence of a particular protein – such as serum and ductal protein biomarkers that may be indicators of breast cancer.

The newest advance was the creation of a way to keep proteins from sticking to other surfaces, like fluid sticking to the wall of a pipe. By finding a way to essentially “grease the pipe,” OSU researchers were able to speed the sensing process by 2.5 times.

Further work is needed to improve the selective binding of proteins, the scientists said, before it is ready to develop into commercial biosensors.

“Electronic detection of blood-borne biomarker proteins offers the exciting possibility of point-of-care medical diagnostics,” the researchers wrote in their study. “Ideally such electronic biosensor devices would be low-cost and would quantify multiple biomarkers within a few minutes.”

This work was a collaboration of researchers in the OSU Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, and the University of California at Santa Barbara. A co-author was Vincent Remcho, professor and interim dean of the OSU College of Science, and a national expert in new biosensing technology.

The research was supported by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory through the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute.
